| Kindergarten-Grade 3-A buoyant picture book that will delight pet owners. The family dog is shedding, and his young owners must rid him and the house of excess hair. A battle is waged while the chant continues enumerating all the places it accumulates. Wonderfully bright and zany surrealistic cartoon illustrations add to the hilarity. An industrial strength, pink, cow-shaped vacuum gobbles up the furniture as the ever-enlarging dog continues to shed. However, readers will have to forgive a tiny lapse in syntax necessary for poetic flow (e.g., "We won't see those hairs no more" and "You won't have no hairs to fight") in light of the gleeful success of the whole. A rambunctious read-aloud with a bit of pet care thrown in for good measure. | |

| I and my two children (ages 4, 6) have not read a kids' book as hilarious as this since Cat in The Hat. In simple language and as near to perfection rhyme, beat and metre as one can get, this author turns the distasteful task of brushing a massive mutt into such darn fun that kids want to read and hear it over and over again. There's great imagery here too...."He gave a heave...he gave a shake....just like a doggy-powered earthquake...." I have one beef, and I hate to say it since the book is a treasure, and that is the title. The story is about a DOG, not bears. The editors or publishers should have been more original than simply use a line from the book for a title. This is in my opinion a true CLASSIC, and kids and parents should treat themselves to the humour and brilliantly simple style of this author. I'm looking for more poetry books such as this from her! | |
